Representation is power.

LGBTQ LEADERSHIP IN ACTION

With the election less than a week away and more than 570 LGBTQ candidates on the ballot, our current LGBTQ elected officials are demonstrating why LGBTQ leadership is so important.

Harper’s Bazaar profiled 11 pioneering women on the impact they’ve made and the pressures of being a historic first. Read pieces from U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin, U.S. Congresswoman Sharice Davids, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Virginia state Delegate Danica Roem.

U.S. Congresswoman Sharice Davids also celebrated Indigenous People’s Day. She is the only openly LGBTQ Native American ever elected to the U.S. Congress.

Congratulations to U.S. Congressman Mark Takano, who received the Congressional Management Foundation (CMF)’s Democracy Award in Innovation and Modernization! This award honors non-legislative achievement in operations and constituent service by congressional offices and members of Congress.

U.S. Congressman David Cicilline penned an op-ed in The Providence Journal highlighting his work to provide COVID-19 economic relief for Rhode Islanders.

For an elected official, coming out carries an extra spotlight that keeps far too many leaders in the closet, with untold consequences for our community’s rights. Earlier this year, Wisconsin state Rep. Greta Neubauer came out to her constituents as bisexual. She spoke with Victory Institute Vice President Ruben Gonzales about her coming out journey. Watch their full conversation here!

Colorado state Representative Leslie Herod celebrated National Coming Out Day with a touching tweet.

Long Beach City Mayor Robert Garcia celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by honoring his mother in a touching video about the power of immigrants.

Anchorage, Alaska has chosen a new acting mayor: Austin Quinn-Davidson is now the first woman and openly LGBTQ person to serve as mayor or acting mayor of the city!

Geo Neptune is officially Maine’s first openly transgender, nonbinary and two-spirit elected official. Read about their path to making history in the Indian Township School District here!
