Hi John — I’m Liz Dunning, and I am writing to you as a gun violence survivor who never wants another family to suffer the pain and carry the loss that I do.
Seventeen years ago, my mom was murdered when a stranger rang our doorbell. Some days are easier than others, but her memory — and her absence — is always with me. So three years ago, as I prepared for mom’s 70th birthday, I wanted to do something meaningful to honor her. I decided to run a marathon on her birthday. I ran 26 miles for the 26 years we shared together.
That day, I ran for my mom — for all the memories we shared and all those we lost to gun violence. I ran for my kids, who never got to meet their grandma. I raised nearly $30,000 for Brady that day in her honor. When my mom was killed, I felt like I had lost my voice. Running that marathon helped me reclaim it, and with my renewed spirit, I decided to dedicate my voice to Brady.
Now, as Brady’s Vice President of Development, I see how this work gives hope to those who have suffered the same loss I did. Hope is infectious like that — it spreads until suddenly we’re making real progress and creating real change. What’s more, life-saving legislation, like universal background checks and a federal assault weapons ban, is supported by the majority of Americans — meaning we've never been closer to passing these reforms and making gun violence a thing of the past.
So please, John: Will you make a gift to Brady today so we can honor gun violence victims and survivors by making tangible change in this country, ending gun violence, and saving lives? Every dollar you give will be matched by a generous donor — but only up to our $25,000 midnight goal.
Do you know the thing they say about marathons? That the first two-thirds are the months of preparation and the last third is all heart? Well, it's true.
We're in the final stretch right now, John, and what we do today could impact the future of generations to come. We can make progress on gun violence and save lives, but we're going to need your help to do it.
Please, John, will you give $5 or more now — every dollar you can spare to have DOUBLED before midnight — to help Brady make tangible change in our country and finally end the gun violence epidemic?
We’re working across the country — in Congress, courts, and communities — to create tangible change that will save lives.
That’s why I keep digging deep and keep fighting every day of my life to end gun violence. I know my mom would be proud to see so many people like you fighting for change.
Thanks for everything you do.
Liz Dunning
Vice President of Development
