I am a native Nevadan, but I am also a proud daughter of immigrants. My mother worked as a data processor for Clark County, and my father was the first Chinese card dealer on Fremont Street.
Like so many first-generation immigrants, being the first to do anything meant they frequently dealt with discrimination. Despite these struggles, my parents persisted, worked hard, and raised us to treat others the way we wanted to be treated.
The principles of hard work, getting a good education, and serving the greater good aren’t unique to me and my family. These are values that so many other hard-working immigrant families share.
So when we have a president who actively demonizes immigrants and exhibits the same displays of racism that my parents experienced years ago, it proves we have so much more work to do -- especially in the next six days.
This election is going to be close. This year, the Latinx community makes up nearly 20% of Nevada’s voting population and Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders will make up roughly 11% -- the largest share of any battleground state.
But the president has repeatedly tried to limit access to voting by creating barriers that would have disproportionately impacted communities of color as well as seniors and voters with disabilities.
When Steve worked to expand access to the ballot box and provide safer options for voting during a pandemic, Donald Trump threatened to withhold federal funding, sued our state, attacked him on national television, and undermined the legitimacy of mail-in voting.
Every voice can make a difference in this critical election -- but we’re up against unprecedented attempts from the GOP to suppress our right to vote.
That’s why I’m asking for your help: Steve is just $8,329 away from reaching his October fundraising goal. We need to turn out voters in every corner of the state and ensure that this election is determined by the people. Can I count on you to chip in $25, $15, or any amount to help Steve reach his final end-of-month goal before Election Day? →
