With the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, a 6-3 conservative skew could last for decades. It’s undemocratic and it needs to be fixed with term limits. Add your name now to demand 18-year term limits to the Supreme Court. |
Amy Coney Barrett has been confirmed to the Supreme Court. She now has secured a 6-3 conservative skew that could last for years. And, as the youngest justice ever confirmed, her extreme and outdated views on abortion, health care, and so many more issues could sit on the Court for decades.
No president should be able to shift the entire ideology of the court like Donald Trump has over his single term as president, nominating 3 judges in just 4 years. And because each justice receives life tenure on the Supreme Court, every nomination becomes a crisis.
We need 18-year term limits on Supreme Court justices, an idea supported by both notable liberals and conservatives alike. That’s why, in cooperation with Rep. Don Beyer and more, we introduced the Supreme Court Term Limits Act in the House — but we need your help to make this a reality.
Despite losing the popular vote of the last 6 of 7 presidential elections, Republicans have nominated 15 of the last 19 justices on the Supreme Court.
This is not what our founders intended when the Supreme Court was created. Their idea was that after a long, brilliant legal career, someone could spend the last few years of their career using that expertise to help lead the country.
But now, Republicans have turned this into a competition to find young judges to sit on the Court. They give these justices the ability to decide on rulings that determine the future for generations to come — and that’s why these appointments have become so divisive.
It’s undemocratic and it needs to be fixed. An 18-year term limit is the only way we can finally solve this system, ensuring new justices enter the Supreme Court that change with the voice of the people.
It’s clear: Lifetime appointments are a threat to our progress as a nation and risk our democratic values. Sign our petition now calling for 18-year term limits for Supreme Court justices. We need your voice to help push for progress on this critical issue.
