John --
I'm so excited to be endorsed by Brand New Congress and join the BNC slate of candidates for 2020! I launched my grassroots campaign to represent Maryland's 5th Congressional District so I could fight for everyday people. I'm running to guarantee healthcare as a human right through Medicare-for-All.
I'm running to ensure our children have a livable planet through the Green New Deal. I'm running to tackle the housing crisis and ensure that every single person has a place to live. I'm running to enact criminal justice reform, so poverty isn't criminalized and people aren't exploited. I'm running to invest in public education, ensure debt-free college, enact universal pre-K, and end the school-to-prison pipeline.
I'm refusing all corporate PAC money, because I believe that our representatives should only be beholden to the people. I'm running because I believe that we need a Brand New Congress to do all of this.
In my life I have experienced what it’s like to work to put food on the table and to struggle to get healthcare for my children. I’ve lived through poverty. I’ve experienced the oppressive criminal justice system. I’ve lived through a healthcare system that minimizes the needs of black and brown women. I’ve relied on assistance so that my family could have the footing to make a better life. It’s exactly those experiences that makes me qualified to be a member of Congress.
I think that having people with lived experiences who can turn those lived experiences into legislation, and who lead from their experience, is so important. The thing about having people from the working class in Congress is that we have firsthand experience with how legislation affects us. It’s having people lead from the inside out instead of the outside in.
Brand New Congress has been fighting for everyday people since its inception. BNC candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez electrified the country when she successfully defeated ten-term incumbent Joe Crowley. It was AOC's election that ultimately inspired me to step up and run for office myself. Our district has been under-represented by corporate politicians like Steny Hoyer, and it’s time for a change. I knew that if she could do it, I could too.
It is an incredible honor to follow in her footsteps as a BNC candidate myself. With that said, the only people who will decide this election are the residents of MD-05. While I gladly accept this endorsement, I'm ready to get back to work. There are fewer than eight months until election day and I have a lot of doors to knock.
Can you contribute to my campaign and Brand New Congress today and help us turn out the vote for real progress in Maryland’s 5th district?
