The 2020 WIIS Gender Scorecard is out! It shows that despite some progress, the national and international security field remains a male-dominated field. Women remain underrepresented at the governing board and expert levels. The 2020 Scorecard also spotlights the nuclear security community and provides baseline data on the gender balances in think tanks, including think tanks focusing on arms control and nuclear security issues. Lastly, the Scorecard provides information on the gender distribution in major international security and arms control and nuclear security journals. The Gender Scorecard, is part of a continuing effort by WIIS to measure the gender disparities in US foreign policy and security communities. See where your think tank stands!

Thank you for attending one of the recent Women In International Security (WIIS) virtual discussion and Book Launch events discussing The Gender & Security Agenda: Strategies for the 21st Century

#SHEcurity: Peace needs women. More and fast.

In the year of the 20th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, it is time to take stock of participation and representation of women at all levels of decision-making in foreign and security policy. For the #SHEcurity Index, we collected data from the EU, its member states and the G20 in six different categories, namely politics, diplomacy, military, police, civil and military missions, and business. Our aim was to track the progress since these countries committed themselves to the Women, Peace and Security Agenda 20 years ago.

November 10, 2020 1:00 pm – 1:45 pm (EST)
As we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the United Nations, we are facing a myriad of global challenges from pandemics and proxy wars to climate change and humanitarian disasters--all of which require cross-border, multilateral solutions. What makes for a successful multilateral negotiation? What role do diplomats play, and what are their responsibilities? How has diplomacy changed during the pandemic? Join us for a conversation with seasoned negotiators and authors Rebecca Webber Gaudiosi of the US, Jimena Leiva-Roesch of Guatemala, and Ye-Min Wu of Singapore as they walk us through their lessons learned.

WIIS Global is launching a cyber, technology, and security project intended to break down the complexity and nuance of the cyber world into byte-sized pieces.

To that end, to launch the cyber technology and security program, WIIS is compiling a resource packet, a comprehensive ‘study guide’, of original WIIS Blogs, WIIS Policy Briefs, and other forms of unique content from a myriad of sources such as Podcasts, Reports, Journal Articles, and more focusing on topics such as: Cyber Warfare, the Internet of Things, Big Data Issues, Military Technologies, Artificial Intelligence, and more.

In order to create a comprehensive collection of resources, examples, and policy in these areas, WIIS invites its members, and members of the International Security community, to submit their original work to be published as a WIIS Blog or WIIS Policy Brief.

Additionally, if there are resources you would like to ensure are added into the WIIS Cybersecurity & Technology Study Guide for a specific topic, please submit those.

Blogs and other submission requirements must be submitted to Maeve Murphy ([email protected]).

The WIIS Cybersecurity & Technology Study Guide Unit IV is out now!

On 31 October 2000, the United Nations Security Council adopted resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325) on Women, Peace and Security. This resolution launched the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda which called for
  1. Increasing the representation and participation of women in peace and security decision-making processes.
  2. Integrating gender perspectives in the analysis of peace and security issues; and
  3. Adopt special measures to protect women from all forms of conflict related sexual and gender-based violence.
Since 2000, the UN Security Council has adopted 9 more WPS resolutions.

WIIS' work seeks to advance the goals and ideals set forth in UNSCR 1325 and in the broader WPS agenda.

To mark the anniversary of UNSCR 1325, WIIS and the WIIS Chapters and Affiliates will be hosting a variety of events discussing the WPS agenda and the role of gender in international peace and security.
