Friend,
On this day in 1994, the Federal Assault Weapons Ban was passed by Congress with bipartisan support and signed into law. Ten years later, it was allowed to expire.
Why? Three letters: the NRA.
Powerful gun industry and lobbyist groups like the NRA know that a ban on military-style weapons is bad for business, so they've poured millions of dollars into political campaigns. They've helped bring scores of Republican politicians to Washington, who are beholden to them and refuse to take action and reinstate the ban despite the growing epidemic of gun violence stealing innocent lives from communities across the country.
The result? Fatalities from mass shootings have skyrocketed 347% since the ban expired in 2004. Every few weeks, in some cases merely days, we're seeing perpetrators of gun violence carry out massacres using assault weapons like the AR-15 that are designed to kill as many as possible as rapidly as possible. This ban could have saved some of those lives, and we need to bring it back. Now.
In 2019, we've had more mass shootings than days in the year so far. I'm not okay with that -- no one should be. It's past time we pass commonsense gun reform to save lives and reduce gun violence, and we know from experience that an assault weapons ban works.
If you're with me, and believe it's time to bring the Federal Assault Weapons Ban back for good, add your name now to pressure Congress to act.

If we want to save lives, we know what we need to do. We need to get weapons of war off our streets.
Thank you,
Adam
