Friend,
One of America’s core democratic beliefs is in the principle of one person, one vote. We, the people, decide who serves in public office through elections.
The United States has a couple hundred years of experience in holding and running elections to decide our leaders. We believe that a successful election is one that is free, fair, respected and safe.
In a free election, all eligible voters are able to vote without hindrance, interference or intimidation.
In a fair election, all votes are counted transparently, non-partisan rules and laws are followed and any disputes are resolved without bias toward any particular candidate.
In a respected election, the losing candidate accepts the results, concedes and engages in a good-faith transition process to the election’s winner.
And in a safe election, risks of COVID-19 transmission and political violence are minimized.
As a country, we have processes and institutions in place to ensure these standards are met and our elections are successful.
However, the reality is that this year’s election is unlike others in the past. The COVID-19 crisis is leading to a significant shortage of poll workers, resulting in fewer open polling places. Additionally, cuts to the U.S. Postal Service may delay delivery of mail-in ballots and hinder us from meeting the standards of a successful election that we’re used to seeing. As a result, we may not know the results of the election on election night, but we must ensure that every vote cast by every American is counted.
The people we elect will influence how our economy, our schools and our justice systems are run. They will make decisions that affect each and every one of our states and our communities.
Our lives are shaped by our elections. And in this unusual year, we must do what it takes to ensure every vote counts and every vote matters. This is how democracy stays alive –– through free, fair, respected and safe elections.
Have you made your plan to participate in our democracy and vote this year? Make sure your voice is heard by Tuesday, Nov. 3!
In solidarity,
Sydney Roberts
