Growing up in Orangeburg, I didn’t know that I lived in the “corridor of shame.” I was the son of a single mom who learned to read from comic books. My grandparents helped raise me. They didn’t have a lot, but my grandparents taught me the important stuff: that hard work and character matter.

I know Cory learned the same thing from his family. When he was a kid, his parents had to rely on the help of a white couple posing as them in order to purchase their home in what was a predominantly white suburban New Jersey neighborhood. Their ability to purchase that home forever impacted Cory's life. Not every family has that opportunity. And that’s what Cory and I are fighting for: opportunity for EVERY American.

When I got my acceptance (and scholarship) to college, it felt like a dream come true. I headed off to Yale (which is where I first became friends with Cory), and eventually Georgetown Law, but I never forgot where I came from. I came back to South Carolina and taught 9th grade social studies, then went on to work for Congressman Jim Clyburn, then went to the private sector to bring good-paying jobs to South Carolina, and then served as the South Carolina Democratic Party Chair to move our state forward.

Now, against the odds, I’m tied in multiple polls with a 17-year incumbent. That’s thanks to the grassroots energy and support from people like you.

I’m running for the United States Senate because my story — and Cory’s story — shouldn’t be unique. We need leaders in Washington who will open the doors of opportunity for ALL Americans.

In six days, we have the chance to remove career politicians like Lindsey Graham, who’s lost touch with the people he was elected to serve, and send fighters like Cory back to help move this country forward for everyone.
