Dear John,
URGENT: The Supreme Court just issued a ruling that could disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of voters and flip the election to Trump.
We need to act fast to get the word out about the Court's latest decision, and what we can do to overcome it.
Earlier this year, a federal judge ruled that mail-in ballots in Wisconsin should be counted as long as they are postmarked before Election Day, allowing every voter to cast their ballots without risking COVID-19 infection.
But the Supreme Court's conservative majority just ruled that mail-in ballots in Wisconsin can only be counted if they are received by Election Day.
It's too late for voters to be 100% sure that their ballots will arrive in time if they haven't already been sent, so we're doubling down on voter-education efforts that make sure voters know that they must drop off their mail-in ballots or vote IN PERSON to guarantee they are counted. And we're also making sure voters know their rights when they head to the polls early or on Election Day.
There isn't much time. Please donate whatever you can right now to support our vital work.
At the time of the ruling, there were more than 600,000 mail-in ballots that had been requested in Wisconsin and not yet returned—most of them by Democrats. Trump won Wisconsin by just 22,748 votes in 2016, so if those ballots aren't accepted, that could potentially throw the election to Trump.
And voter suppression isn't just happening in Wisconsin. In Texas, the governor has removed all but one ballot drop box in every county, forcing people to drive as far as 100 miles to vote. Voters in Georgia have stood in line up to 10 hours because of a lack of polling places.
In Nevada, Trump's campaign has sued to stop mail-in ballot counting in Las Vegas. A court in Alabama threw into question thousands of ballots by declaring the instructions invalid. North Carolina courts established a method to “cure” invalidated ballots, but did little to inform voters.
Worse yet, there are signals that the Supreme Court may change the rules on mail-in voting in states like Pennsylvania and Michigan, too, especially now that Amy Coney Barrett is on the Court. As a reminder, she, John Roberts, and Brett Kavanaugh all worked for the GOP in Bush v. Gore.
We've produced clear, engaging voter-education videos and viral posts that let voters know how to ensure that their votes are counted. And with a social media following of more than 5 million people, we can get this content in front of the voters who urgently need to know the truth.
