Hi John,

Next week, we should know who will become the US president for the next four years - the result of the election will influence the world we live in for years to come.

One thing's for sure, whether it's Joe Biden or T Donald Trump, we don't want a future trade deal with the US that floods supermarket shelves with chlorinated chicken, hormone-fed beef and pus-filled milk.

Can you tell the government our food standards aren't on the table in a US trade deal?

Once trade deals are signed, it's really hard to change the details - that's why we need to get ahead of the UK-US trade deal now and get the government to make a commitment in law to block lower standard food products from being imported to the UK.

We can't let the government get away with lowering our food standards, just to make it easier to trade with the US.

And it's not just about the food we eat, a bad trade deal could threaten farmers, animal welfare and our environment. Unless they are done right, trade deals could threaten our ability to tackle the climate emergency too.

You might have heard that a UK-US trade deal could introduce chlorinated chicken and hormone- pumped pork and beef onto our supermarket shelves. [1] But that's not the only thing to be worried about.

American milk is allowed to have double the amount of pus that is currently allowed in the UK. [2] And the US allows fruit and veg to be sprayed with many pesticides, insecticides and fungicides currently banned in the UK. [3]

Bad trade deals have been stopped before - a few years ago, a people-powered movement stopped a bad trade deal between the EU and the US that would have let corporations have more power over European laws and public services, as well as undermining our food standards too. [4] If we come together now, we can have another victory against harmful trade deals.

Can you tell Boris Johnson that we won't put up with dropping our food standards for the US president?

Thanks for all that you do,
