Voting ends November 3, but don’t expect results that night. The results will only be known after every vote is counted, and that will take days or weeks.
On Election Night, we’ll see the media make projections of winners and losers. Those projections are often wrong, as we saw all over the country in 2018. They are not the results. The results only come from counting the votes—all the votes. And counting every vote—particularly when there’s a surge in voting, as there is this year—takes time.
So ignore the “projected winners” of “Election Night”; wait for officials to #CountEveryVote, because only then can we know the true results.
Trump and his Republican cronies might try to intimidate Democratic voters on election day. They might claim victory based on the early count of in-person ballots, ignoring or rejecting the votes cast by mail. Trump has already said we need to know the results on November 3—an impossible, unreasonable demand. We cannot know the results until we count every vote; that takes time, so we cannot know the results on November 3.
We need to be ready to respond, if they prematurely declare victory or try to halt the counting of mail-in ballots. If Trump tries to subvert the results of the election, we will mobilize a nonviolent resistance to defend our democracy and protect the results.
We need you to be part of our mobilization.
A “Protect the Results” rally has been called for November 4 at 3 PM at Embarcadero Plaza. Our goal is to inform voters about our Count Every Vote message and to inform the public how to mobilize in case Trump/Republicans try to undermine the results. Join here: https://www.mobilize.us/ptr/event/351412/
We need volunteers. Sign up to volunteer here.
We need our elected leaders to stand by democracy—and by those who defend it.
We’re asking you to call ALL your Members of Congress, Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Mayor Breed, and your Supervisor TODAY. Urge them to use their authority to stop voter intimidation, make sure every vote is counted, no matter how long it takes, and stand by their constituents who stand up for democracy.
And finally, make note of the Election protection hotlines.
The national, nonpartisan Election Protection coalition works year-round to ensure that all voters have an equal opportunity to vote and have their vote count. Election Protection provides Americans from coast to coast with comprehensive information and assistance at all stages of voting – from registration, to absentee and early voting, to casting a vote at the polls, to overcoming obstacles to their participation and to ensuring that their votes are counted. If you have trouble voting, or if you witness voter intimidation or process irregularities, call one of these national hotlines:
Don’t delay—vote TODAY!
The time has come—the 2020 Election is NOW. If you are registered to vote, you should have received your ballot in the mail by now. Considering the urgency, now is the time to follow the plan you made to vote as early as possible—fill it out and drop it off. Be an #OctoberVoter and get your ballot in before November.
Know where to drop off your ballot. You probably shouldn’t mail your ballot at this point unless you have no alternative. San Francisco voters can drop off their ballot at the Voting Center, at 11 drop-off sites at public libraries (weekends only), or at any polling place in San Francisco (November 3 only). If you have to vote provisionally (because you marked a wrong choice or aren’t already registered), you should go to your local polling place, so that you’ll have all the races that are on the ballot in your precinct.
Tracking your ballot, before you get it and after you cast it: California is providing online, email, text, and phone hotline resources to voters to check the status of their ballot this year. San Francisco voters can track their ballot on the Voter Portal at https://sfelections.org/voterportal; voters throughout the state can sign up for ballot tracking notifications at https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/ballot-status/wheres-my-ballot.
Haven’t gotten anything in the mail about this election? Check your voter registration status right now. Yes, even California purges its voter rolls, so if you haven’t voted in a few elections, you may have been removed. If you’ve moved or changed your name, your registration may be out of date. It never hurts to check and it only takes a minute.
Not registered to vote? The deadline to register has passed, but don’t fret—ask about Conditional Voter Registration at your polling place or at the Voting Center.
Looking for guidance? The presidential race isn’t the only thing to vote on. There are California propositions and City ballot measures, and we have our ballot guides plus other resources on our vote page. This page also links to all of the information described above—it’s your one-stop shop for all the information you’ll need to make your voice heard in this election.
Learn everything you need to know to vote in 2020.
