Utah to Mexico: Hola!


Salt Lake Tribune (10/26/20) reports: "A decade ago, energy companies built a natural gas storage facility on Mexico’s Baja California coast to receive imported liquefied gas by ship and gasify it for distribution around northern Mexico. That plan didn’t pan out, but under a new proposal backed by various Utah agencies, the plant known as Energia Costa Azul (which translates to Blue Coast Energy) would be 'reverse-engineered' into an export terminal that would liquefy gas piped south from Rocky Mountain states and load it onto special tanker ships bound for Asia. To that end, officials in the Beehive State have teamed with industry consultants to contract with researchers from the University of Utah and other schools to gather data showing how exporting the West’s natural gas overseas would reduce global greenhouse emissions while supporting rural job creation at home. That’s according to Wes Adams, who oversees oil and gas for the Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration, or SITLA...'With additional infrastructure investment, natural gas from the Western U.S. could be utilized in Mexico’s energy market and exported to Asian markets,' the letter states. 'Mexico has the capacity to become a major North American west coast energy export hub to Asian economies with several key strategic deep water ports that could connect with natural gas pipelines for LNG exports.' Utah natural gas could be piped most of the way to the proposed LNG terminals in Oregon and Baja through existing pipelines that are now operating 60% under capacity, according to Adams. A final leg to Costa Azul would take about 150 miles of new pipeline from Yuma, Ariz., across northern Baja."

Institute for Policy Innovation (10/27/20) blog: "You can’t make this stuff up! Last month California Governor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order 'requiring sales of all new passenger vehicles to be zero-emission by 2035 and additional measures to eliminate harmful emissions from the transportation sector.' Just one month later California’s Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) announced it would be cutting electric power to about 1 million of the state’s residents in an effort to reduce the risk of downed powerlines starting even more wildfires...But what if the utility has cut off your electricity and, in the year 2035, all you have is an electric-powered vehicle, as per Governor Newsom’s recent executive order. How do you escape the coming inferno? Even if you have a gas-powered generator that can supply electricity—which apparently a lot of Californians do since blackouts aren’t rare—it could still take a while for the EV to charge up. It’s one thing to want to see the country transition away from gas-powered cars and trucks to EVs. But it’s quite another thing to force that on the public when the powers-that-be can’t provide the power they need so at least the fleeing residents can drive their EV to safety. "

Dry the darn dishes! 


Wall Street Journal (10/27/20) column: "For years American homes have been stuck with dishwashers that take forever and still don’t get the job done. A new Department of Energy rule finalized this week will help change that. If a camel is a horse designed by committee, Sam Kazman, general counsel for the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), says today’s low-performance dishwashers must have been designed by regulators who eat out. Regulations on energy and water usage—tightened in 2013 by the Obama Administration—mean that dishwashers now take at least two hours to complete a full wash cycle. Dishes may still emerge with pieces of last night’s lasagna baked on. Two years ago CEI petitioned the Energy Department to allow dishwashers that would reduce the average cycle to one hour from two, while also giving better performance. CEI argued that if the aim of the regulation was to conserve water and energy, it’s unlikely they achieved their purpose. People responded to poor dishwasher performance by pre-rinsing each dish before putting it through their washers, wasting more water, or running their dishwashers twice, wasting water and energy. The revised DOE rule is not peace in the Middle East or a Covid-19 vaccine. But it is an example of how common-sense deregulation can deliver real benefits for the public. Judging from the public comments in support of the proposed rule, we’d bet most Americans will be delighted to learn they will soon be able to buy dishwashers worthy of the name."
