With 7 days to go, Pelosi and Feinstein's inaction threatens our rights

Dear John,

Reproductive rights, gun safety laws, racial inequalities, labor rights and dozens of other issues now have a shaky standing in the highest court in the land.

Amy Coney Barrett’s record speaks for itself.  She has ruled against sexual assault survivors, reproductive rights, racial justice and more.

Even worse, Justice Kavanaugh—whose nomination to the D.C. Circuit I challenged in 2006, long before running for Congress—has already foreshadowed a dangerous future. He has alluded to how the Supreme Court could intervene to disrupt vote counting, and effectively determine the outcome of another presidential election.

This assault on RBG’s legacy threatens us all.

It didn’t have to be this way.

At any point, Speaker Pelosi could have at least delayed Barrett’s confirmation hearings. She—uniquely—held the power to force the Senate to consider new Articles of Impeachment, for either President Trump or Attorney General Barr.

But despite her promise to “use every arrow in her quiver” on national television, Pelosi chose not to.

Can you help us win a new voice for San Francisco in Congress, one that will go to the mat to defend reproductive rights and the independence of our institutions?

Instead of standing behind the Senators- of her own party- who walked out of the Senate to deny a quorum and stop the process, Pelosi willingly let these hearings proceed.

Pelosi could have brought the Senate process to a halt, if she so chose.

She could issue new Articles of Impeachment to address any of Trump’s many impeachable offenses—including his self-enrichment at public expense, and his risks to public health—that were not included in the limited process last year. She could also shut down the government.

Pelosi chose not to deploy those tools, sacrificing the Court—and values from reproductive liberty to worker rights—in the process.

Pelosi knows the rules of her power better than any other Speaker in recent history. But, yet again, she has chosen to put Washington’s interests before those of our communities.

I am the first Democrat in a generation to face Nancy Pelosi in a general election.

We need change in Washington—and we can start by changing the voice that San Francisco sends to represent our city in Congress.
