This is Mike Espy again, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Mississippi. I’m reaching out one last time before Election Day to provide an update on our race and ask if you can help us make history here in the Magnolia State come Tuesday.

You may remember I ran for Senate against Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith back in 2018, coming closer to winning a Senate race in this state than any Democrat since 1982. The decision to run again for Senate was pretty simple: I'm sick and tired of Mississippi coming in last.

Here’s a true story, John: I woke up the other day and was reading my newspaper. The headline said, “Mississippi is 51st.” Fifty states, and Mississippi is ranked 51st (if you include the District of Columbia). And you know what we’re last in the most? Health care.

Our people have cancer, diabetes, asthma, heart disease. It’s just too much. And then, when you go to the doctor, you’re afraid to go because that bill is so high. Prescription drugs cost so much. Even when folks get sick, some won’t go to the doctor at all.

I’m running to be Mississippi’s Health Care Senator so that we’re no longer last in health care outcomes, and so that our people can get the care they need. I’ll defend the Affordable Care Act and work to make it even better. But Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith? Well, that’s a different story.

My opponent wants to rip health care away from millions of Americans and end protections for people with pre-existing conditions, myself included. She joined Mitch McConnell in blocking desperately needed coronavirus relief. She even claimed this pandemic would go away in “a couple of weeks,” and that was back in February.

We need those in Washington to step up, defend our health care, and get a handle on this pandemic. And in less than one week, with enough support, we can move Mississippi one step closer to no longer being last.

We have real momentum here in Mississippi: I’m down by just a single digit in this race, but Mitch McConnell’s network of Super PACs could dump money into our race any day now to try and save Hyde-Smith from defeat.
