Updates from the Young Center

October 2020
As you know, Young Center staff have been at the forefront of reuniting forcibly separated families, locating parents, and advocating for an end to the many immigration policies that lead to family separation. Last week our Executive Director Maria Woltjen joined WBEZ (NPR-Chicago) and our Child Advocate Program Director Gladis Molina Alt spoke with KQED (NPR-San Fransisco) to discuss this administration's family separation policy, how it started, its long-lasting harm, and how it continues today.

As more reports unearth the cruelty of the Trump administration's family separation policy, many of you have asked how you can help. Thank you! What can you do? First, read our most recent blog that lists four ways you can help children who have been forcibly separated from their families. Then, scroll down for more ways to help!

In case you missed our last email, we're launching a new initiative, “Reimagining Children’s Immigration Proceedings: A Roadmap for an Entirely New System Centered around Children." Our current immigration system fails children at every step, from the time they are apprehended and detained to decisions that put children in danger. It’s not enough to continually fix pieces of the existing system. We need to focus on building an entirely new system that treats immigrant children first as children. Through this initiative and the report we’re releasing today, we seek to reimagine and implement immigration proceedings for children centering their rights and best interests. Join us for the launch of Reimagining today at 07:00pm ET/06:00pm CT and learn how you can get involved.

"I work for immigrant children because they have a voice, and we should listen."
-Erick Romig, Young Center-DC
The Young Center works with the most vulnerable unaccompanied and separated immigrant children so their voices are heard and their best interests are protected. We also advocate for an immigration system that treats children as children. To learn more about our work, visit theyoungcenter.org or follow us on social media. Click here to donate.
