As you know, my wife, Carol, prepares a monthly prayer alert.  I hope you will share Carol's thoughts with your friends and fellow worshipers.  Thank you for taking an interest in her monthly devotion. --Gary

As the countdown to Election Day 2020 reaches just days, the eyes of the nation and the world are poised to see the outcome and the reaction to that outcome.  That well-worn phrase "the most important election in our lifetime" rings very true for 2020.

The differences between the candidates and where they will lead our country are stark.  Their styles are very different, and the road they took to get to this point in our nation's history could not be more different.

Washington has been upended by the Trump presidency … in a good way.  It took an outsider to shake things up and achieve success on many fronts through unconventional means.

No doubt there are still some folks out there who are registered to vote and have not yet made their decision.  Dueling campaign ads and raucous rallies have yet to provide the clarity needed to make that final decision.

For those people my suggestion would be to pull back from the noise of these final days before Election Day.  Consider your own family and ask the question:  Are we better off than we were four years ago?

Look at job growth, the economic outlook, the role of America in the world and the prospects for the future.  Take a dispassionate look at the issues dear to you and the faith you live out every day.

In quietude and in prayer seek the Lord's guidance.  Make your decision a personal one based on your family.  And then vote knowing that you have done all a thankful citizen can and should do.

If you are like us and planning to vote in person on Election Day, I have a few suggestions for how you can make your influence felt right up to the big day.

  1. Send out an email or text message to like-minded friends just giving them a final nudge from someone they trust.  Include Election Day voting hours and last-minute early in-person voting opportunities. These can be obtained from your state or county Election Board offices.

  1. Contact your local campaign or party headquarters and offer to work at the polls or make Election Day reminder phone calls.

  1. Does someone you know need a ride to the polls?  Make that offer, as I have done.

  1. Do you know a like-minded family with small children for whom in-person voting this year is a real challenge with home schooling added to the mix? Offer to stay at their home a short while so the parents can vote while you spend time with the little ones.

  1. Just be creative in getting the word out to those who think as you do and be creative in your offers to get those votes in and counted.

Finally, please pray for our country in the days ahead.  No doubt you have gone to the Lord and His Word for guidance in these tumultuous days.  You have sought guidance from the very Word of God on issues that face our country from the sanctity of life to the freedom to practice our faith.

You have applied those Biblical principles to the choices before you and have cast your vote early or will vote in person on Election Day.  Millions of others have done the same.  We do not know the outcome of this election, but we do know that America is divided and on edge.

Pray for our country in the days beyond the election.  A good portion of the electorate will be very upset with the results no matter who wins.   Ask God for civility, safety and a new appreciation for our freedom of speech.  Ask God to guide our elected leaders to make decisions that fulfill the goals of our Founding Fathers.
