Friends,

When my family immigrated to the United States, they didn’t know a word of English.

They left Sweden because of a great famine. Like so many others who come to this country, they hoped to build better lives for themselves, their children, and future generations.

They came to Mora, MN, right here in the 8th Congressional district within Kanabec County.

Without knowing English, they struggled to communicate with people in town. Simple tasks like buying supplies were difficult, and they were ostracized by the local community.

Because the children couldn’t go to school without knowing English, my great, great grandfather built this one-room schoolhouse by hand so his children would have a place to learn skills like math, reading, and writing. The children then went home and taught their parents English!
 

The schoolhouse is now part of the Kanabec History Center where students and visitors can learn about Minnesota history.

My family is very proud of this legacy. Hearing this story as a child was the foundation of my strong understanding and respect for our public school system.

Schools are truly the great equalizer, but unfortunately, our schools’ budgets have been cut to the bone.

We don’t have enough teachers, and we don’t have enough funding for any of our core disciplines, let alone sports or the arts. There is no doubt that this is the fault of a broken Congress, which has mandated dozens of policies, but has never fulfilled its promises to fund them.

As your next Congresswoman, I will fight for our schools to get the funding they were promised and deserved.
