Amy Coney Barrett was sworn in as the newest Supreme Court justice last night — meaning she could start her new job as soon as today.
There’s a reason the GOP rushed this illegitimate confirmation. It has everything to do with the Affordable Care Act and the case on the ACA’s constitutionality going before the Supreme Court beginning on November 10.
The very same Senators who voted to confirm her are in the pocket of private insurance and big pharma. Those Senators knew that in order to fulfill their mission to overturn the ACA, they needed a conservative justice seated before this landmark case begins.
Justice Barrett’s confirmation makes the overturning of the ACA much more likely than before. If the ACA is overturned, it will completely change the political landscape for health care reform. We don’t know what will happen, but as Medicare for All activists, we need to be ready for this moment.
Without the Affordable Care Act, protections for patients with pre-existing conditions are on the line – including the nearly 9 million people in this country who could now be denied coverage for having had coronavirus. Covid-19 may be viewed as a preexisting condition.
It’s clear that we need a health care system that can withstand the whims of a partisan court and will guarantee care to all no matter what. We need a Medicare for All system that – similar to programs like Social Security – is strong enough to withstand partisan attacks.
Like you, we’re angry and frustrated. But the best thing to do is to channel that emotion into action. After you sign up, we’ll keep you in the loop about this court case and how you can take immediate action on Medicare for All if the ACA is overturned.
If that happens, all eyes will be on health care reform and how we move forward. We need to be ready to raise hell and make the case loud and clear to lawmakers that Medicare for All is the strong, smart replacement we need.
Sign up now and we’ll be in touch soon.
