AARP, Nurses on Boards Coalition Seek Local Representation
Want to lead efforts to improve your neighborhood—but not sure how to get started? AARP and the Nurses on Boards Coalition together invite nurses to become board members in their communities, representing AARP on issues including improving patient care, supporting family caregivers, and speaking up for policies that lead to better health and well-being.
Thanks to a $2 million gift from University of Pennsylvania President Amy Gutmann and her husband, Michael Doyle, a newly endowed program, the Gutmann Leadership Scholars Program at Penn Nursing, will fund 10 scholars annually starting in January. Priorities for selecting students include diversity, first-generation status, high academic achievement, and a desire to make a lasting impact in underserved communities.
Archives of Psychiatric Nursing Assesses Future of Nursing Report
The Future of Nursing 2010 report gets a close examination in a special issue of Archives of Psychiatric Nursing, which provides “clear data about achievements relative to each of the four key messages of the ... report.”
As its guest editor writes, “Many of these papers are derived from original research, undertaken specifically” for the special issue, which also looks ahead to the future of nursing 2020-2030 report.

New - Updated Code of Ethics for Nurses Invites Comments
The International Council of Nurses is revising its Code of Ethics for Nurses in response to the realities of nursing and health care, as it has done periodically since the code was introduced in 1953. The latest version of the code, to be launched in 2021, has undergone a review by members of the ICN board and is open now to comments from others. Deadline to review: November 22.
Tell Your Story to Help Create Trustworthy Health Communities
What do you as a nurse, group, or organization do to build trust between you and those you serve? Submit your stories and ideas to the Building Trust Initiative, a collaboration between the National Center for Complex Care and Needs and the American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation. Deadline: October 30.
The American Nurses Association seeks nominations for its Innovation Awards, which celebrate nurse-led innovations that improve patient safety and outcomes. The award monies go toward supporting translational research, development, prototyping, production, testing, and implementation for an innovative product, program, or project. Deadline: November 1.
RWJF Seeks Applications for Racial Equity Research
Achieving racial equity in the U.S. requires a multipronged policy approach. To that end, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation seeks proposals from organizations and interdisciplinary research teams to build evidence about how national, state, and local policies can decrease racial inequities in health and well-being. Application deadline: November 24.
Midcareer health professionals and behavioral and social scientists are encouraged to apply for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellows program, a yearlong learning experience in Washington, D.C., that seeks to build and maintain strong and diverse leadership and a workforce skilled in health policy. Deadline: November 9 at 3 p.m. ET.
Participate in Testing the Board Engagement Survey
Calling all registered nurses (RNs) and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs): have you served for at least one year on a board of directors with fiduciary responsibilities? You may be eligible to participate in a study, approved by the University of Massachusetts Boston Institutional Review Board, to test an instrument aimed at measuring the engagement of nurses on boards. Take the survey and share this message with your RN and APRN colleagues. Deadline: December 31.
Nurses are leaders in hundreds of ways; the Nurses on Boards Coalition (NOBC) wants to put some of those ways into words. NOBC has a short survey asking nurses who contribute as board members to explain how they are broadening the perspectives of others. Speak up!
