Yesterday, I proudly cast my vote to confirm fellow Hoosier, Judge Amy Coney Barrett,  as an Associate Judge of the United States Supreme Court. I proudly cast my vote for her Supreme Court nomination. Throughout the confirmation process, Judge Barrett has more than proven her credentials to sit on the highest court in the land. This is a proud day for Indiana.

One month ago, Judge Amy Coney Barrett was selected by President Donald Trump to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, filling the vacancy created by the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. A respected federal judge, educator, and public servant, Judge Barrett has conducted herself throughout this process with poise and integrity. She has demonstrated her intellect, legal acumen, and commitment to the Constitution. She is clearly a brilliant jurist who interprets the Constitution as written and carefully weighs the facts of a given case. Despite Senate Democrats’ repeated attempt to drag her into the political fray, Judge Barrett has proven that she will make her decisions based on the law rather than politics.

Hoosiers are extremely proud of Judge Amy Coney Barrett and the trail she has blazed for others. She is a role model for young women everywhere, including my young daughters. I am incredibly proud that our newest Supreme Court Justice hails from America’s Heartland and the great state of Indiana.

Honoring Beirut Bombing Victims

Last week, I introduced a resolution along with 12 other Senators, to designate October 23 as a national day of remembrance for members of the United States Armed Forces who were killed or injured by the terrorist attack on the United States Marine Corps barracks in Beirut, Lebanon on that date in 1983.

The deadly barracks bombing in Beirut took the lives of 220 Marines and 21 other military personnel serving on a mission of peace. Honoring the sacrifice of my fellow Marines, and all those who lost loved ones in the bombing, is the least we can do to pay tribute to these heroes. I’m proud to introduce this resolution to mark October 23 as a national day of remembrance for the fearless members of the United States Armed Forces who fell for our country 37 years ago.

Democrats Continue to Block COVID Relief

Last week, I issued the following statement regarding Senate Democrats once again voting to block COVID-19 relief:

Senate Republicans attempted once again to deliver critical assistance to the families, workers, schools, hospitals, and small businesses that are all struggling as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The targeted package the Senate voted on today would help Americans safely get back to work and school, and would provide aid to millions of Americans in need. Sadly, Senate Democrats have once again blocked this much needed assistance, choosing instead to play political games. The American people need assistance now.

I further discussed this during my weekly Senate GOP Leadership stakeout. Learn more here.

My American Innovation and Jobs Act

Startups and other small businesses are the engines of job creation in the U.S. and will be critical to our economic recovery as we emerge from the coronavirus pandemic. The American Innovation and Jobs Act will ensure we are doing our part by making the research and development (R&D) tax credit as accessible and useful as possible so employers can focus on growing their business, while helping to create jobs and boost our economy at the same time.

Companies and startups can either deduct R&D investments or claim them as a tax credit, which helps them to invest in developing new, innovative products that lead to additional job creation and a stronger economy. My bill reverses a change in the 2017 tax law to ensure that companies can continue to fully deduct R&D investments each year. It also doubles the refundable R&D tax credit and extends it to more small businesses.

Calling on Pope Francis to Denounce Religious Persecution and Human Rights Abuses in China

Last Monday, I sent a bipartisan letter to Pope Francis concerning the treatment of ethnic and religious minorities in Xinjiang, China. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has systematically persecuted the Uyghur Muslim population of Xinjiang for years, and I am extremely disappointed that on Thursday of last week the Vatican cut a deal with a slaveholder state.

We had the great privilege to hear the Pope’s encouraging words to a Joint Session of Congress just over five years ago. In September 2015 he encouraged Senators and Representatives to use the ‘voice of love’ as a ‘resource in the battle to eliminate new global forms of slavery.’ Today, we are still encountering slavery and oppression, and it is perhaps no place more extreme than what we are witnessing in Xinjiang and the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) indefensible treatment of Uyghur Muslims.
