John,
Donald Trump said out loud what Republicans have tried to keep hidden: He wants to “terminate” Social Security’s dedicated funding. If he is successful, he will end Social Security as we know it.
Republicans are working overtime to conceal this explosive plan. They want to obfuscate the plain meaning of Trump’s words.
We have 7 days to make sure every senior in the country knows what Republicans have been trying to suppress: That if Trump has his way, Social Security will be completely unable to pay benefits by 2023! Chip in $7 to power our message in the final week!
Social Security Works is in the Republicans’ crosshairs, because we are exposing the truth. But, because they have no control over us, they’re instead going after the hardworking actuaries employed by the Social Security Administration.
Senator Chuck Grassley, the powerful chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and Representative Kevin Brady, the top Republican on the House Ways and Means Committee―the two committees with jurisdiction over Social Security―have demanded that the independent, nonpartisan Chief Actuary of the Social Security Administration:
“[D]etail, and provide documentary evidence of, the technical assistance provided by the Office of the Chief Actuary of the SSA for production of the book “Social Security Works!,” by Nancy J. Altman and Eric R. Kingson.”
Republicans are upset because four Democratic Senators asked the Chief Actuary to analyze how the Republican plan to defund Social Security would impact our earned benefits and because the Chief Actuary answered honestly: Trump’s plan would cause Social Security to come to a screeching halt.
Why are Republicans upset with Social Security Works? Because Social Security Works, along with Joe Biden and others, have publicized this honest, expert analysis laying out the Republican plan to destroy Social Security.
We have 7 days to make sure every senior in the country knows what Republicans have been trying to suppress: That if Trump has his way, Social Security will be completely unable to pay benefits by 2023! Chip in $7 to power our message in the final week!
The Chief Actuary would have done nothing wrong if he had helped us with our book. (It’s an excellent book, and you can get your copy here.) He is paid, after all, with our tax dollars, as are Grassley and Brady. They are supposed to serve the public, which includes Social Security Works. However, he did not help us. You know who did ask for help and got it? Right-wing billionaire Peter G. Peterson, for his anti-Social Security book On Borrowed Time: How the Growth in Entitlement Spending Threatens America’s Future.1
Did Grassley and Brady demand details about that? Of course not. They and their donors are getting desperate. Seniors are abandoning them in droves, as their true agenda becomes clear. Grassley and Brady are flailing, trying to work the refs and keep their real plans hidden. They’re trying to attack us because the truth is getting out.
Republicans are attacking Social Security Works because we’re effective. We’re fighting back―can you chip in $7 today?
The Republican method has long been clear: Because of Social Security’s universal popularity, they cannot attack it on its merits, so they have to claim that the program is unaffordable and doomed. They want cover from the independent actuaries, and if the actuaries won’t provide it, Republicans want to replace them with a partisan crony who will―just like the Trump administration has replaced so many other independent government watchdogs.
We have 7 days left to fight back―and together, we’ll win.
Thanks,
Michael Phelan Social Security Works
