Dear friend,

We had another Democratic presidential debate last night, and we heard a lot of things from a lot of the candidates. One thing we didn’t hear discussed enough is the economic and human cost of President Trump’s poorly-executed trade war with China. Here are the relevant statistics for my state and my district:

The toll of the Trump Trade War so far:

  • Cost to Missouri’s 8th District: $231,621,306
  • Cost to Missouri: $1,982,047,185

Even if you feel, like I do, that the United States must do something to confront China’s unfair trade and business practices in the global economy, you have to ask, what is President Trump’s agenda achieving here? Unfortunately, the answer is: very little. Today’s Republican Party clearly believes that the path to economic prosperity runs through the super rich and massive multinational corporations. This listless trade war does nothing but hurt our local economy, including our farming communities and our small towns. To put it simply: China isn’t paying for the trade war. We are.

This exploitation and deprivation must end. The trade war is just one example. These backwards policies take so much from our local economies, and all they’ve done is kill jobs and deplete resources.

I am in this fight against some well-funded, massive interests lined up to keep the status quo working for them. I need your help to fight for common-sense policies that benefit real people. If you can, send some reinforcements to the fight today.

It’s time for new leadership in our country, because what we have isn’t working. Thank you for your confidence and your support.

-Kathy
