Peggy Shepard on CNN's Climate Town Hall
In case you missed CNN's Climate Crisis Town Hall, Peggy Shepard had an opportunity to ask Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke how he would help Americans deal with extreme heat, one of the public health impacts of climate change that disproportionately effects low-income communities and communities of color. Safe Cosmetics & Personal Care Products Act

Safe Cosmetics & Personal Care Products Act
We have been working to educate the community about toxic ingredients found in personal care products, especially those that target communities of color. Earlier this year we held a community briefing that launched our Beauty Inside Out campaign. We have also been actively pursuing legislation to address this, including helping pass the Period Products Label Act here in New York State. This is why we support the Safe Cosmetics and Personal Care Products Act of 2019, which was introduced by Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) yesterday. It’s the only federal cosmetic safety legislation that would immediately ban more than a dozen of the worst toxic chemicals from cosmetics, fund research into safer alternatives, address the over-exposure of communities of color to toxic chemicals, require full fragrance ingredient disclosure, and ban most animal testing. Faces of Flood Zones

Faces of Flood Zones
NYC Climate Week Social Media Campaign

To better illustrate the impact of flooding driven by climate change in our communities, we're running a social media campaign during New York City’s 2019 Climate Week (Sept. 23rd-29th). We want to humanize the issue by showcasing the people who live or work in these flood zones.

Want to participate? Take a photo of yourself in front of your home, job, or any other personally significant place in Northern Manhattan that may be impacted by flooding - now or in the coming years. To determine if your place will be in a flood zone, click on this link to see a map of Northern Manhattan flood zones.

Once you have the photo, email it to [email protected] and include your 1) name, 2) location of the photo (whether a specific street address or simply the neighborhood), and 3) any thoughts you have on flood zones or climate change as well as any social media handles you want us to tag. We will collect these photos and start sharing them on our social media channels (FacebookTwitter, & Instagram) with the #FacesOfFloodZones hashtag beginning Sept. 23rd. You can learn more about this campaign at weact.org/floodzones.
