I wish I could say I’m surprised by the Senate’s vote today.

Amy Coney Barrett’s rapid-fire nomination, hearing, and now appointment to the highest court in the land is an absolute farce. Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell hatched a plot to pack the Supreme Court in their favor, flying in the face of the election year precedent McConnell himself set in 2016, when Senate Republicans refused to even hold a hearing on President Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland. It’s shameful.

Barrett’s lifetime appointment now solidifies a conservative supermajority on the Supreme Court. For years to come, Barrett will slowly undo the legacy of Ruth Bader Ginsburg -- all but guaranteeing an end to the Affordable Care Act (in the middle of a pandemic!), Roe v. Wade, and LGBTQ+ protections. The new 6-3 conservative court will attempt to block any progressive action to address climate change, voting rights, and racial justice.

But if we flip the Senate, we have a shot at protecting our health care, our fundamental rights, and unrigging the Supreme Court.

I’m outraged by the Senate’s decision and what it means for our democracy -- but I’m letting my anger serve as a call to action. Ruth Bader Ginsburg never gave up, and neither can we. We must use this election to not only oust Trump, but to flip the Senate and kick Mitch McConnell out of power.

Trump said it himself -- his choice to put Amy Coney Barrett on the Supreme Court is a deliberate attack on the Affordable Care Act. And Mitch McConnell did everything in his power to make her appointment a done deal. By ramming Barrett onto the court with every intention to gut the ACA amidst a global pandemic, Trump and McConnell have put American lives in serious danger. 

We’re done with Trump and Mitch’s reign. We deserve leaders who will put our safety first, not gut our healthcare when we need it most. That’s why we need your help to vote them out.

Personally, I don’t just want to see Trump gone this year. I want to see Mitch pack it up for good. And I want to see all of their enablers replaced with true public servants who are committed to strengthening our democracy and undoing the damage this administration has done to our country. I’m sure I’m not the only one. Let’s make that dream a reality.
