Tonight, instead of voting on a COVID relief passage that the House passed 164 days ago, Senate Republicans are expected to ignore RBG’s dying wish and confirm Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court.
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has led the charge on this sham confirmation -- and on Wednesday night, we’re making calls for his Democratic opponent, Jaime Harrison, who is within striking distance of an upset victory over Graham!
Four years ago, when Republicans refused to vote on President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee nine months before the 2016 election, Senator Graham said this:
“I want you to use my words against me. If there’s a Republican president in 2016 and a vacancy occurs in the last year of the first term, you can say Lindsey Graham said let’s let the next president, whoever it might be, make that nomination."
We’re in that exact scenario now, but in the last few years, whatever principles Graham had left have gone right out the window. Senate Republicans have refused to act on COVID relief and are rushing through this confirmation at breakneck speed, even as millions of voters are already casting ballots.
But this isn’t just about defeating a hypocritical politician -- it’s also about electing an incredible leader, Jaime Harrison, who will fight for racial justice, protect our health care, and be a champion for working families in the South and across the country. No matter what happens in the presidential race, we’re going to need him in the Senate to help win the change we desperately need.
