Week of October 26, 2020

The risk of exposure to COVID-19 is still very real -- especially out in the streets! Consider getting tested for peace of mind, collect data on this virus, & keep our communities as safe & healthy as we can right now. If you feel even the slightest bit sick please STAY HOME. And when you show up, mask up!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

All Hands on Deck: Services Not Sweeps!

On Wednesday, October 21st, LA City Councilmembers Blumenfield, Buscaino, Rodriguez, Krekorian, Price, Cedillo, and Lee presented a motion to drastically expand the criminalization and banishment of unhoused Angelenos across the city. This motion instructs the city attorney to draft amendments to LA Municipal Codes to effectively ban sitting, sleeping, or laying within 500 feet of freeways, ramps, and tunnels and any facility opened after January 2018 that provides housing, shelter, services, safe parking, or storage to unhoused people. That's nearly half of the City where being poor and unhoused will be a crime.

We need all hands on deck to put an immediate stop to this cruel and unnecessary motion. As part of the Services Not Sweeps coalition, we are mobilizing to call, email, and shame City Council, submit written public comment, and give general public comment at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, October 27th at 10am.

Tuesday, October 27th @ 6:00PM-8:00PM

Are you new or newly returning to DSA? To Los Angeles? To the Left? Then join us for DSA 101!

At this orientation, we’ll talk about what capitalism is, how it functions, and why socialism is ideologically opposed to it. Participants will also learn about the history of our organization and our chapter in particular, the current projects we’re working on, and how you can get involved. This is not a lecture, but a meeting for new and veteran organizers. We’re excited to chat with you!

Preregistration for this event is required. After RSVPing, you will receive a confirmation email with the information on how to join this meeting prior to it’s start.

Saturday, October 31st @ 12:00PM-2:00PM

We are getting out and pounding the pavement to canvass small businesses along Magnolia Blvd this Saturday 10/31 @ 11:00am to build local support Konstantine Anthony’s campaign for Burbank City Council!
This is not your normal canvassing to be sure — and we are dedicated to making this safe and socially distanced.
We will be walking along the iconic commercial corridor to speak with small businesses and distribute signs for Konstantine that they can hang in their windows. This will be an amazing opportunity to boost Konstantine’s visibilityin a heavily trafficked part of Burbank as well as to take his message straight to the people who need an advocate to represent them on City Council — not real estate or corporate developer interests.
As socialists, our fight is to keep resources and wealth in the community, and out of the hands of big landlords and outside developers who only care about their bottom line. So join us and help canvass for Konstantine!
