John -
2020 began tragically in Australia; wildfires burned over 45 million acres of land. My college roommate lives in Newcastle, and she described the thick smoke, ash falling, and fear for her family's safety. There is no doubt these fires were exacerbated by climate change.
More than 5,000 square miles of the Amazon Rain Forest- the lungs of our planet!- have burned this year alone.
Another friend from midwife school lost her home to wildfire in California just weeks ago. They have a three year old, and they lost EVERYTHING. She shared this photo.
Now our home state of Colorado is ablaze. President Trump likes to blame everything on not "raking the forests," but in reality we got here due to decades of poor management. We're sitting on a tinder box because millions of trees are dead due directly to drought and also because of invasive species that take advantage of trees weakened by extended drought.
Extreme weather is increasing and the reckless environmental policies of Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress have accelerated climate change's deadly effects around the globe.
For some reason, conservative pundits and politicians continue to deny climate change and even laugh it off as a joke despite these clear impacts- people are dying and losing their homes and businesses, and we shouldn't laugh about it.
Last week, Fox News played Johnny Cash's famous Ring of Fire while discussing Colorado wildfires. I cannot abide this disrespect for the danger and tragedy facing thousands of Americans and our planet as a whole.
Enough is enough! My opponent has spent over a decade in Congress and has voted against the environment 97% of the time! I understand the danger of climate change and what we need to do to clean up this mess. I will introduce legislation to mitigate wildfires and clean up after the fires move through; this effort will create good-paying jobs while preventing future disasters. The cost of mitigation is far less than recovery, and a federal jobs program will replace some of the jobs lost due to the COVID economic crash.
Please chip in $500, $275, $100, $25, or even $5 to elect a Representative who will fight against climate change.
Gratitude and solidarity,
