Hi, this is Senator Patty Murray from Washington state.

I wanted to take a moment to reach out before Election Day to tell you why I believe in Mike Espy and his campaign for U.S. Senate in Mississippi. But first, if you’re able to, can you pitch in $10 or more to support him right now? [[link removed]]

Mike and I have a lot in common. I made history when I was elected the first woman senator from Washington state with four other women, back when there were only two women in the Senate. Mike Espy has made history twice in his career, first as Mississippi’s first Black congressman since Reconstruction, and later as the first Black U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. With our help, he can make history again as the first Black senator from Mississippi since the 1800s.

Mike and I also share a similar philosophy when it comes to solving problems. I first ran for office when a male state legislator told me I could never make a difference because I was “just a mom in tennis shoes,” trying to save the preschool program my kids counted on. So, I laced up those shoes and fought back. Similarly, Mike always says, “You don’t get what you don’t fight for.” And there’s a lot to fight for right now.

I truly believe that there is more at stake in the 2020 election than there has ever been in our lifetimes. As Ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions committee, and as a mother and grandmother, I see proof of this every day. The top issue on the line? Health care. Coverage for millions of Americans and protections for people with pre-existing conditions are on the ballot this November.

That’s why it’s so important that we elect leaders like Mike who I know will make health care his number one priority in the Senate. Mike has already pledged to fight for Medicaid expansion, defend and protect the Affordable Care Act, and work to lower the high costs of prescription drugs.

But in order to protect and improve our health care, along with providing greater relief to our communities in light of the COVID-19 crisis, we absolutely need to flip the Senate and regain our Democratic majority.
