Dear John,

“We were drooling and coughing uncontrollably.”

These are the words of Lizzie Horne — a Rabbinical student in Philadelphia — who
was participating in a peaceful protest when the police began launching tear gas
grenades into the crowd.

“The cops wouldn’t let up. We were encapsulated in gas. After that the police
were hitting and tackling people. They were dragging people down the hill and
forcing them down on their knees with their hands in zip ties — and pulling down their masks and spraying and gassing them again. ”

Lizzie’s story is a dire warning. Militarized police tactics are threatening the
safety of peaceful protesters across the country.

John, peaceful dissent is a cornerstone of freedom.
It’s a right, not a privilege. But that right is under attack, and in this
moment, we must pull out all the stops to defend it.

Amnesty has defended freedom from dictators and bullies around the world for
nearly 60 years — and we’re not about to stop now.

To stay independent, we rely on donations from people like you. Please be part of our critical DEFEND FREEDOM campaign. Make your first-time
donation to Amnesty by chipping in whatever you can — even $10 makes a
difference.

To stay independent, Amnesty International does not take a position on
elections, nor on which candidate should be president. But we do have a mission to safeguard human rights . And that mission has never been more challenging — or more important. Can we count on you to DEFEND FREEDOM with us?

John, we are living through unprecedented times. They
demand an unprecedented response.
