Friend,
Ever since 2001, a critical section of the PATRIOT Act has allowed the government to collect an astonishing amount of sensitive data about American’s daily lives. And now, Congress could make this permanent.
It’s called Section 215, and right now Congress is debating whether or not to reauthorize it and cement Donald Trump’s ability to spy on Americans without a warrant.
Tell your member of Congress: Shut down Section 215 of the PATRIOT ACT.
Section 215 of the PATRIOT ACT allows the government to collect our phone calls, location data, medical records, and financial transactions. As Edward Snowden revealed, everyone’s personal data can get swept up in Section 215. But we’re not all being surveilled equally.
The government wrongfully spies on communities of color and immigrants more than others, like the FBI's recent designation of Black Lives Matter activists as domestic terrorists. Specifically with Section 215, people who communicate with family and friends overseas are particularly exposed, which feeds the oppression immigrants and Muslim communities experience in this country.
Tell Congress to shut down Section 215 of the PATRIOT Act for good.
While Congress is debating right now about whether or not to renew Section 215 of the PATRIOT Act, Trump is loud and clear about wanting permanent, indefinite authority to spy on Americans. That means you need to speak up too: Tell your member of Congress shut down Section 215 for good.
Thanks for taking action,
