Everyone knows that Nancy Pelosi is powerful—but do you realize how powerful she really is?

25 years ago, Newt Gingrich exercised that power to alter the course of our democracy.

In 1994, Newt Gingrich consolidated tremendous power into the hands of the Speaker. As part of this concentration, he shifted the strategy for the Republicans to focus almost entirely on fundraising. The Democrats followed suit. The committee chairs are selected for the money they raise from special interests.

As Speaker, Nancy Pelosi controls who sits on the committees. She controls what legislation makes it out of committee and onto the floor to be voted on.  

That’s why Medicare for All, or the Rent & Mortgage Cancellation Act, have never gotten votes on the House floor.

We have 9 days to go to this historic election and I am the first Democrat in a generation to face Nancy Pelosi in a general election.
