The Trump Administration is expected to meet tomorrow to discuss a further drastic cut to the number of refugees allowed into the U.S. next year. This administration has already reduced refugee admissions by almost 75 percent over the last 18 months, setting an admission ceiling of just 30,000 for last year.

Last year’s decision undermined American interests, undercut American leadership and provided an excuse for other countries to cut their help for refugees — at precisely the time when it is needed most. A further reduction would be shameful, inhumane and result in insurmountable harm.

With a record 26 million refugees fleeing violence and persecution, this is a time when America can do something that is right and smart. The most powerful nation in the world has a unique responsibility to protect the world’s most vulnerable people, not turn them away. And since refugees, who have been vetted through the toughest security assessment in the world, have been shown to be net economic contributors to the U.S., the case for this program is irrefutable.

A drastic cut to refugee admissions will only widen the global refugee crisis and its impact on women, men and children who are desperate for safety. It would continue to keep families separated. And it would send a troubling signal to U.S. allies.
In advance of the presidential determination here are two ways you can help.

First, you can support our lifesaving work with refugees in the U.S. and those who may be left stranded around the world.

Second, you can urge Congress to support the GRACE Act, which would restore the refugee admission program to normal levels by requiring presidents to aim to admit 95,000 refugees each year, in line with America’s historic average goal. Call your representative now and ask them to support the GRACE Act.
