Dear friend,
On Thursday, Republicans in the Senate Judiciary Committee violated committee rules to advance Judge Amy Coney Barrett's nomination, and the full Senate will vote on her confirmation on Monday.
It is astonishing that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is pushing through Judge Barrett's nomination after he refused to hold hearings for Judge Garland in 2016. McConnell blocked Garland's nomination for nearly 300 days, saying that the American people should have a say because it was an election year. When the Senate votes on this nomination, there will be just eight days left until the presidential election.
But instead of writing to you about McConnell's hypocrisy, I want to talk about why this Supreme Court nomination matters so much.
Judge Barrett's nomination is personal -- to me and all Americans. I first ran for Congress to protect and expand the Affordable Care Act (ACA). We've made a great deal of progress in the House towards increasing access to quality and affordable health care, but Judge Barrett's nomination threatens to turn the clock backward.
Just this week, President Trump told 60 Minutes that he hopes the Supreme Court, and his nominee, will wipe out the ACA when the Court hears a case about the law next month. Judge Barrett has written critically about the ACA and could be the deciding vote in overturning this law. That would leave millions of Americans uninsured.
Voting rights and reproductive rights are at stake as well. In 2013, the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Since then, voter disenfranchisement has increased exponentially. But in hearings last week, Judge Barrett refused to say whether she believes voter discrimination still exists.
And when it comes to reproductive rights, President Trump promised he'd appoint Judges who are against Roe v. Wade to the bench. He's already put two such Justices on the Court. If Judge Barrett is confirmed, she could be the fifth vote the Supreme Court needs to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Health care, voting rights, reproductive rights, and so much more are at stake. If a new Supreme Court strikes down decades of existing laws and precedents, putting these rights and our lives at risk, we need to be ready to immediately pass new laws to defend them, for as long as it takes. And I need you with me.
Before the Senate votes on Monday, will you make a contribution to our campaign? Help ensure I win my "toss-up" race so I can keep fighting for the issues that matter most to all of us.
