Hey John,
I’ve been doing a lot of work to turn out voters this election cycle. Due to COVID-19, the best way we can make sure voters get to the polls is by talking to them on the phone, so I’ve been doing that work with Swing Left.
I’m taking over the Swing Left email account today because I wanted to share a quick story with you about my recent conversation with Wendy, a voter in Georgia. If you don’t have time to read my story, know this: making calls makes all the difference. That’s why I’m asking you to join Swing Left for a Call Night tonight at 5:30pm ET.
Recently, I was making some calls to Georgia voters. After getting started, some people didn't pick up, and some weren't up for talking. But then I got connected with Wendy.
She was so kind and generous and caring—it was a joy to talk with her. I asked her if she was registered and she said she was, but I asked if I could just double-check. She agreed, and I easily pulled up all the information she needed, because the technology campaigns use is so great.
But we ran into a little problem: she had moved to another address in her same area, but her registration needed to be updated. If it hadn’t been updated, her vote would not have counted. Thankfully, we found the issue and fixed it.
We stayed on the phone for 15 minutes or so going through the steps she would need to take to vote this year. It was such a simple way to help someone vote, but I felt like I had climbed Everest.
After that, three people hung up on me, but I couldn’t care less! I knew I’d made a huge difference for someone.
Sometimes you may get some hangups. You may even get someone who disagrees with us about the state of our country right now. But more often than not, you’ll reach a voter like Wendy who just needs a little bit of help from friendly volunteers like us. So keep going, because those conversations with voters like Wendy are the ones we’ll remember years from now—when we all stepped up in the middle of a pandemic to save our democracy.
Can you join Swing Left for a Call Night tonight at 5:30pm ET? They give you a great training beforehand that teaches you how to use the technology and get up and running. After that, they plug you directly into the campaign that needs your help the most.
