When the Christian Civic League of Maine announced its endorsement of Donald Trump and Susan Collins, they proudly stated they only support candidates they believe will “defend the unborn" and "religious freedom." The CCL has a long history in Maine of anti-LGBTQ and anti-abortion activism, including opposing anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ community members and picketing outside of reproductive health clinics. Of course, they still oppose marriage equality for same sex couples. Perhaps worst of all, the CCL even supports "conversion therapy," the dangerous and discredited practice aimed at changing an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity using a variety of shaming, emotionally traumatic or physically painful stimuli to make their victims associate those stimuli with their LGBTQ identities. And yet, Susan Collins is "truly grateful" for their support.
For years Susan Collins tried to claim she was a moderate independent, but it's never been true -- only voting with Democrats when her vote didn't have an impact on whether or not the bill would pass. Now, she's not even trying to hide the truth. When she accepted the support of this right-wing extremest group, she said she was the “firewall” in the Senate to prevent the passage of “really extreme legislation.” Her examples: Medicare for All and repealing the Hyde Amendment, the law that prohibits federal funding of abortions.
