Newsletter of the Goethe-Institut Washington

Dear Friends,

If you're a big film fan, we have exciting things in store for you! In this newsletter, we announce that this our 28th annual Film|Neu film festival, celebrating another year of great new films from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, will take place entirely virtually – and free of cost to you! We are also launching the fall 2020 half our film series STP-on-Demand: Cinematic Perspectives on Shaping the Past. Next week, our virtual discussion series Radical Diversity continues in Mexico City, while our Counter Memories dialogue series continues with a new episode released on Monday.

Have you already been learning German a while – as a high schooler or a college student – and feel ready to explore what next steps you could take with your German knowledge? Join our virtual Career Days in November to see what's out there for you.

If you want to demonstrate your German aptitude in seeking a new career or education path for yourself, obtaining an internationally-recognize Goethe-Institut certificate of German ability is a great way to do so. Fall 2020 exam registration is open now.

Radical Diversity: Mexico City

In the Mexico City edition of the "Radical Diversity" discussion series, Max Czollek will speak to three independent curators from Mexico City: Violeta Horcasitas, Clara Bolívar (Tlaxcala3) and Alí Cotero (Tlaxcala3). They will discuss the current state of critical curatorial practices, both within the context of the Mexican museum and outside it. They will also examine the structural and social “walls” one encounters in Mexico.

This discussion will be held on English and Spanish. The event will have simultaneous interpretation available.

How do we perceive the past through film? STP-on-Demand, curated by colleagues of the Goethe-Instituts across North America, is a series that comprises works representing a variety of ways in which we see the past shaped through the camera lens and onscreen. These films can be screened across North America. All are available with English subtitles; please check the individual listing information for subtitles in further languages.

Humboldt in Mexico: The Vision of the Explorer (2017), dir. Ana Cruz

At the turn of the 19th century, Alexander von Humboldt began a 5-year scientific expedition in the New World. Traveling through dangerous waters and dry deserts, and over treacherous mountains and unforgiving terrain, Humboldt documented the environment, geography and cultures of the continents of North and South America. The most famous scientist of his age, Humboldt changed our understanding of nature. He was also the first person to write about human-induced climate change. This fascinating documentary takes us on Humboldt's adventure of discovery and exploration throughout New Spain, an area that includes present-day Mexico.
