My friend Lucy McBath is a mother, survivor, fighter, and now, congresswoman.

That’s directly because of the work our movement did in 2018 to elect a Congress with the courage to stand up to the gun lobby.

In Congress, Lucy has led the fight to pass laws that will save lives. But now, she’s facing her first re-election, and the gun lobby will stop at nothing to defeat her. That’s why I’m personally reaching out to ask you to help her fight back.

I know what setback feels like, and I know that it can sometimes be hard to summon up the courage within to keep moving forward.

But what I have learned is that it is not the setback that defines us, but how we respond.

Lucy understands that too. We both turned our pain into purpose — fighting to protect others.

But that’s not the only thing we have in common. Lucy and I are no strangers to close elections.

In my first race for the Arizona State House, I won my primary by just 445 votes. In my final race for the House of Representatives, I won by just over one percent.

Last year, Lucy won her first race by just one percent too. So this race is likely to be close once again — a small number of votes could make the difference.

But Lucy cannot take on the forces that want to defeat her alone. We must stand together with her down the stretch.
