Have you seen our new federal legislative proposal, Dismantling the Federal Drug War: A Comprehensive Drug Decriminalization Framework? It provides a roadmap to effectively end the criminalization of people who use drugs and begin repairing the harm drug enforcement has caused, especially to communities of color.

This release is extremely timely: this month marks the 50th anniversary of Congress enacting the Controlled Substances Act -- which authorized and launched the modern war on drugs. And in a matter of days, voters in Oregon will decide on a first-in-the-nation all drug decriminalization ballot measure. If passed it would serve as a model and starting point for states across the country.

DPA’s federal model legislation - the Drug Policy Reform Act - shifts the authority for classifying and regulating controlled substances from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It eliminates inequitable and harsh sentencing practices that have contributed to mass incarceration. And it provides for decarceration and expungement of records for those imprisoned under the current system.

Too much harm has been perpetrated in the name of the drug war, particularly targeting communities of color and low-income communities. We must continue to fight for alternatives like the Drug Policy Reform Act that will begin righting the wrongs of the past.
