PFAW Member, An astonishing one-half of Donald Trump supporters actually believe the central tenet of the QAnon conspiracy theory – that leading Democrats are part of a cabal of pedophiles, and that Trump himself is the only one who can stop it. Yes, you read that correctly. One-half of Trump supporters believe this is real. To help shed light on this new conspiracy theory taking hold in online forums and across social media, PFAW’s Right Wing Watch just published a groundbreaking new report on QAnon, the internet conspiracy theory that has made its way from far-right internet message boards and into mainstream conservative rhetoric. QAnon’s rise is a frightening reminder of the danger the far right’s disinformation machine poses during the election this year in particular, as well as demonstrates the damage that Trump and his right-wing cronies have already done to public trust of official sources. With several QAnon-believing Republican candidates likely to take office in 2021 (some even in Congress), it’s more important than ever that we work together to forewarn our communities about the danger of misinformation generally, and about the insidious danger posed by QAnon specifically. You can also help us share the new report on Facebook! >> This year especially we need your help to get the word out. Social isolation during the coronavirus pandemic has led to the dangerous conspiracy theory spreading to even more people than it might have done during a typical election year. Now, we must work together to make sure it doesn’t take further hold in our communities – and that it doesn’t affect the election’s results. We can’t let Trump win the election because of the harmful and frightening lies being told by far-right conspiracy theorists. If you don’t have your own social media accounts, please share the report itself with those who do and ask them to post for you. It’s vital that we get this information out far and wide to ensure that the conspiracy theorists’ narrative does not dominate the digital air waves. This close to the election it’s even more important to remain vigilant about sharing accurate information, and about informing our communities when bad actors work to infiltrate them with lies. Thank you for helping us stop this dangerous conspiracy theory. Our democracy depends on it. In solidarity, – Sarah, PFAW
