This week at CBPP, we focused on health, the economy, food assistance, state budgets and taxes, housing, and family income support.
- On health, Aviva Aron-Dine noted how a lawsuit to overturn the Affordable Care Act (ACA) threatens millions who have gained health coverage through the ACA’s Medicaid expansion. Jesse Cross-Call detailed how Medicaid expansion has helped narrow racial disparities in health coverage and access to care. Hannah Katch pointed out that expansion has improved postpartum coverage and access to care. Jessica Schubel reported that expanding Medicaid for parents improves coverage and health for both parents and children. Matt Broaddus noted that uncompensated care costs are well down in expansion states. He also wrote on the widespread health insurance coverage losses since 2016. Sarah Lueck pointed to growing evidence of the need for stronger rules governing short-term health plans. We also updated our chart book on the benefits of Medicaid expansion.
- On the economy, Arloc Sherman analyzed new data showing that more than 4 in 10 children live in a household struggling to afford basic household expenses. We updated our tracker of the COVID-19 recession’s effects on food, housing, and employment hardships, our fact sheet noting that struggling families and the economy need a robust, bipartisan COVID relief agreement, and our backgrounder on how many weeks of unemployment compensation are available.
- On food assistance, Ed Bolen discussed a federal court decision striking down a Trump Administration rule that would have eliminated SNAP for 700,000 jobless people.
- On state budgets and taxes, Cortney Sanders outlined how states can achieve an antiracist economic recovery from the COVID-19 recession.
- On housing, Ann Oliva described how a new federal plan rejects proven strategies to prevent and end homelessness.
- On family income support, Ali Safawi examined the historical racism embedded in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program.
