A nation without freedom of speech isn’t free at all

Dear John,

In America, we all have a right to free speech. It’s enshrined in the First Amendment.

But today, this fundamental right is under attack.

Social media mobs. Cancel culture. Campus speech policing.

If someone doesn’t like what you say, prepare to face the consequences. People have lost their jobs, had their personal information splashed across the internet, and have even faced violent threats and attacks.

It’s hardly a surprise that a recent poll revealed that more than 60 percent of Americans have opinions that they are afraid to share. That number rises to 77 percent for conservatives.

John, these stats are symptoms of a much larger problem in America—the tyrannical attempt by some government officials, activist groups, and radicalized individuals to control the words you speak.

This behavior is indefensible. A nation without freedom of speech isn’t free at all.

College campuses are often the epicenters of attacks on free speech

You’ve probably seen the videos, John.

A faculty member menacingly tells a pro-life student that she doesn’t have a right to speak freely on campus.

A college administrator threatens to call campus police on a student if she doesn’t end her “free speech” ball event.

A student mob surrounds conservative peers who are peacefully sharing their beliefs, threatening them with violence if they don’t stop.

Police arrest several supporters of a student group for handing out the Constitution on a public campus walkway.

College students are the future of our society and government. They must be taught to respectfully disagree and share opposing viewpoints if we expect them to become successful leaders.

But that’s not the lesson they’re learning in college today, John.

Instead, college campuses are often the epicenters of attacks on free speech.

Conservative and pro-life speech are regularly shouted down or silenced. Some universities don’t even allow free speech unless it is expressed in a tiny, reserved spot on campus or only during certain hours of the day. Students and student group supporters have been punished, harassed, and even arrested on campus for exercising their First Amendment rights.

As a result, we now have a generation of college graduates who struggle to handle ideas different from their own. Instead of debate, many turn to censorship. Instead of discussion, many turn to violence. And it’s infiltrating every area of our society.

But it’s not all bad news, John.

The ADF Center for Academic Freedom (CAF) is on the frontlines protecting free speech on campus. And because of God’s blessing (John 15:5) and the generous support of people like you, they’re seeing great success.

CAF has won more than 435 victories for free speech on campuses across the United States, with a 91 percent win rate in direct litigation of university cases.

You can take a deeper look at how your gifts are helping the Center for Academic Freedom protect free speech on campus here.

Freedom of speech needs a strong legal defense now more than ever

A university official silencing a student is no different than the government passing a law threatening individuals with crippling fines for declining to refer to a male as female or vice versa. Or an employer firing an employee for expressing his religious beliefs in a self-published book. Or police arresting sidewalk counselors for praying on a public walkway outside an abortion facility.

The First Amendment protects the free speech rights of all people. If America is going to remain a diverse and tolerant society, we must act now to protect our First Amendment freedoms—before things get even worse.

Will you stand against efforts to silence Christian and conservative voices with your tax-deductible gift today?

Generous Ministry Friends have given a $500,000 grant to challenge you to raise your voice for freedom. They know that if we don’t act now, those in positions of influence will continue to abuse their power to strip away your most cherished liberties.

If you feel strongly that America must remain a nation that protects and celebrates freedom of speech, please take your stand today.

Your support is critical to ensuring that freedom always has a strong legal defense.
