The Democratic presidential debate in my hometown of Houston, Texas has begun, and I have one question on my mind. Will the candidates talk about the irrevocable harm our broken immigration system is causing, and their plans to fix it?

That question is certainly on the minds of thousands of DACA recipients in the Houston area.

As a DACA recipient myself, I know our lives have been upended ever since President Trump rescinded the program two years ago. I also know the challenges many of us face to afford the $495 fee required for the DACA renewal application.

While the nation’s eyes are on Houston tonight, make sure local DACA recipients get the help they need applying for renewals. I was born in Mexico, but the United States has been my home since age 5. My parents always told me to study and work hard in order to achieve my goals. But I knew my undocumented status would limit what I could do.

DACA allowed me to reject those concerns and fulfill my goals of attending college and helping my community. I was crushed when President Trump attempted to terminate the program two years ago. All my doubts returned. I am constantly haunted by the possibility of being deported, or lacking work authorization.

Thousands of young people in Houston have stories just like mine. We’ve all had to put our dreams on hold, and defer plans to make positive change in our country. But DACA renewal is still available while the Supreme Court considers the fate of the program. Dreamers in the Houston area just need our help to make renewal possible.
