Senate Republicans' priorities are misplaced. Instead of providing relief for families and communities suffering because of the pandemic, and instead of answering calls for racial justice, they are rushing through a nominee whose record is hostile to our civil and human rights.
At last week's hearing, Barrett made a few things clear:
•
She wouldn't state the simple fact that voter intimidation is illegal.
•
She refused to acknowledge systemic racism and the impact of voter suppression on Black and Brown communities.
•
She did nothing to alleviate grave concerns that she'll overturn decisions protecting our health care access and reproductive freedom — during a pandemic that has cost the United States more than 220,000 lives.
We're running out of time. Senators are expected to vote on this nomination on Monday. Barrett's nomination poses an urgent, serious threat to our democracy, plain and simple.
Barrett came out of this sham hearing looking even more extreme than when she went into it. She lacks the independence we need in our justices. Her confirmation would be a disgraceful affront to Justice Ginsburg's legacy — and a direct threat to civil and human rights.
