Weekly InSight
The Jalisco Cartel moving in on Mexico City. The trauma still felt a year on from the Battle of Culiacán. The never-ending list of criminal threats in Venezuela. This week, InSight Crime considers the "soft power" that specific criminal groups can exert, pressuring rivals to submit, populations to stay quiet and governments to make deals. Elsewhere, we look at the rot at the heart of Mexico's armed forces and how an increasingly demanding black market may see highly specific medicines being looted.

Mexico City Braces for Impact from Jalisco Cartel Advance

Despite having long played down the presence of the powerful Jalisco Cartel in Mexico City, a series of recent moves are making such denials increasingly pointless.

In recent weeks, signs have emerged that the Jalisco Cartel New Generation (Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación – CJNG) is expanding its presence in Mexico City, largely by allying itself with the Fuerza Anti-Unión to take on the capital’s largest criminal gang, La Unión Tepito.

Colombia’s Biodiversity Under Threat

InSight Crime Co-director Steven Dudley briefed stakeholders at a launch event for an investigation -- in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund and others -- into the four main criminal activities fueling environmental destruction in Colombia: illegal mining, timber trafficking, land theft and wildlife trafficking. Dudley noted that the splintering of Colombia’s armed groups has led to their expansion into activities like illegal mining, and he outlined how corruption at many levels facilitates a range of environmental crimes. Along with our partners, InSight Crime investigators are mapping supply chains, tracking criminal actors, and homing in on corruption risks in the biodiversity hotspots of the Amazon basin and along the Pacific coast. The project -- funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) -- will provide stakeholders with actionable recommendations on ways to combat entrenched corruption and criminal actors that imperil Colombia’s biological heritage.
