Health and Retirement Security!

Dear John,
|
In light of everything seniors have had to endure over the past year, next year's 1.3% Social Security Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) is simply pathetic. The COVID pandemic has devastated many older Americans both physically and financially. Seniors living on fixed incomes need a lifeboat; this COLA increase is more like an underinflated inner tube.
Fortunately, there are some lawmakers who agree and they have just introduced emergency legislation that would give seniors a 3% COLA raise next year! And the National Committee strongly supports the immediate passage of U.S. Representative Peter A. DeFazio's (OR-04) emergency bill, H.R. 8598, that would increase next year's COLA to 3%.
As you know, compared to these powerful interests, we are both small and underfunded. And yet year after year we win. Not every time. Not every battle. But we've won the most important ones. And that is because of the loyal support of our members and supporters, like you, who are willing to pull together and take on the millionaires, billionaires and corporate interests and politicians who simply want to squeeze the little guy so they can continue to feather their nests and protect their fortunes.
This legislation is a critical first step in addressing the failure of the current COLA formula to adequately address the rise in costs seniors are facing. But what we need is a permanent fix to the COLA formula — and so we're also calling on Congress to pass the "Social Security Expansion Act" which would do just that.
Seniors deserve a fair and adequate Social Security COLA next year and every year! So please give what you can today to help us launch this urgent campaign in Congress to give seniors a much-needed benefit boost at a time when the coronavirus pandemic has threatened their financial and health security!
