So when they say we're a threat, they're right. We're a threat to a damaging and failed system that's rigged for the few.

--Jeremy Corbyn

Comrades,

When the working class unites and fights, there’s nothing we can’t accomplish. This week gave us two shining examples.

After last year’s dramatic US-backed coup ousting socialist president Evo Morales and installing a right-wing authoritarian, anti-indigenous party into power, the people of Bolivia have firmly rebuked the coup leaders and its cheerleaders in the US ([link removed])  and voted Morales’s party MAS (Movimiento al Socialismo) back into power by electing Luis Arce.

Despite persecutions over the past year by the government of Jeanine Áñez, Arce, MAS, and the people of Bolivia stand victorious.

On the home front, after a five-day strike, Alameda Health System’s workers have successfully gotten the entire AHS board thrown out. After a five-day strike, workers in Alameda Health System won their most ambitious political demand—that the Alameda County Board of Supervisors remove the AHS board. Now it remains for the county to give AHS workers the fair contract they deserve.

Meanwhile, on the national level, Trump represents a unique threat to democracy in US, telegraphing his intentions to question and even challenge the election results if they don’t favor him. What’s more, he seems to be signaling to his supporters that they should intimidate voters, or “standby” for paramilitary intervention in case he loses.

But just like workers in Bolivia defied the far right to bring MAS back into power, workers in the US are getting ready to fight to defend democracy too ([link removed]) . As socialists, we know that collective action—at the workplace and in the streets—will be our best defense when our democracy is under attack. So be sure to join us and invite your friends, coworkers, neighbors, and comrades to the Mass Rally to Count Every Vote on November 4 ([link removed]) .

When workers stand up and fight, we win!

** TAX THE RICH: 15 FOR 15 PHONEBANK FT. KEITH BROWN

------------------------------------------------------------

Tonight! October 22 | 5:30–8:30 p.m.

Online – RSVP for info ([link removed]) ♿️

Join Oakland Education Association President Keith Brown and DSA in phonebanking for California’s Prop 15! We all have a stake in fighting for the working class and against austerity, and talking to voters is how we win. We'll have training, tools, and the solidarity of fellow DSA members from up and down California and across the country.

Prop 15 is a crucial piece of legislation that, if passed, will reclaim ten to twelve BILLION dollars a year for California’s public schools and services by closing a commercial property tax loophole that has been benefiting only a fraction of corporations and wealthy investors for decades.

This proposition is a crucial step towards redistributing the wealth and resources that corporations have been hoarding for years back to the working-class public. So please join us to help spread the word. Together we can build a world that works for all of us, not just the wealthy few.

On the call, you’ll learn the basics of how to ask someone to join the organization as a dues-paying member. Then, we’ll have a phonebank party where we put what we’ve learned into action.

No experience required. We’ll walk you through what you need to know, and we’ll be on the call to support you.

------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday, October 25 | 1–3 p.m.

Online via Zoom ([link removed]) ♿️

In this training for DSA organizers, we will explore our personal stories together, and discover how they inform and support our political movement. Personal stories are important because they allow us to identify with each other's experiences, motivate us to fight for common aims, and ultimately build solidarity.

Adapted from Marshall Ganz’s “Public Narrative,” this training will challenge you to put aside the logical reasons why we need to win a better world and rather consider emotional & personal reasons. We'll talk about what makes a story compelling and how stories can be important organizing tools that bring others into our movement. Then, we'll each develop and practice our own political speeches together.

Suggested reading and viewing material at the RSVP link below!

Note: While all are welcome, this event is geared towards individuals who are already actively organizing with the Democratic Socialists of America or allied groups.

** MASS RALLY TO COUNT EVERY VOTE

------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday, November 4 | noon–5 p.m.

Oscar Grant Plaza 14th Street & Broadway, Oakland ♿️

As we approach the November election, the multiracial working class is facing multiple crises: dangerous school reopenings, no pandemic relief, continued police violence and repression, climate change crashing down upon us, and a potentially chaotic General Election looming before us.

But we know that collective action in the streets is still the best antidote to the anger and fear we face daily. As democratic socialists, we must be a visible and committed force fighting for democracy and building a mass movement of the working class.

That means — whatever the status of the election — we need to be ready to mobilize on November 4th. Join East Bay DSA and coalition partners from across the Bay Area as we rally to demand that every vote is counted, and to begin organizing to grow DSA and our movement in the coming months. We'll convene at Oscar Grant Plaza starting at noon for a mass rally and day of action. RSVP below!
