The resurgence of COVID-19 around the country is a reminder that we aren’t out of the woods yet, and that more must be done to protect our communities. This is particularly important for our underserved communities.
We’re seeing a disturbing trend of coronavirus spreading in public housing at a much higher rate than the rest of the city. Evidence suggests that the spread is connected to poor ventilation — a problem that the New York City Housing Authority has so far failed to address.
As of this email, more than 1,000 families are in need of duct cleanup and fan replacements in their home, and the problem has persisted for months.
I’ve long said that when New York City gets a cold, the Bronx gets the flu — and failures like this are a major reason why. Fellow New Yorkers on the Upper East Side or in Williamsburg don't have to deal with this. And even if they did, it wouldn’t take months to fix!
We need to do something about the inequities pervading our society. That’s exactly the kind of gross injustice I’m headed to Washington to do something about.
Thank you,
Ritchie
