Dear Friend --

As the Los Angeles economy reopens, we are continuing to see a surge in COVID19 cases. As CLUE, we know that we must center our recovery plan around workers and workplace safety.

That's why we are part of the coalition that is calling for the establishment of Public Health Councils <[link removed]>, which will give L.A. County a way to ensure our communities, including workers, business owners, consumers, relatives, and neighbors, are protected from COVID19.

What are they?

It is impossible to think that the L.A. County of Public Health (DPH) will have the capacity to monitor every workplace for compliance with COVID19 safety protocols.

Public Health Councils will serve as the eyes and ears of the day to day operations and expand the capacity of DPH.

Public health councils would also meet to develop a plan for monitoring compliance with virus-prevention orders and identify any instances of non-compliance and report them to the Department of Public Health.

What can you do?

Call and email your L.A. County Board of Supervisor and tell them you support Public Health Councils. Below is the script.

My name is [insert name] and I'm with [insert your organization, union, business, or identify yourself as a county resident]. I live in District [insert district number] and work in District [insert district number].

As our economy reopens, it is imperative that our workplaces comply with County Health Officer orders. Workers urgently need their jobs: without income, many families fear losing their homes. Business owners urgently want to re-open but unsafe protocols in the workplace threaten the health of workers, their families, customers and our communities.

We’ve lost over 6,800 Angelenos to date and many were disproportionately Black, Indigenous, persons of color (BIPOC) in essential jobs forced to choose between their families' health and economic survival. BIPOC make up around three-fourths of the residents living in Los Angeles County and account for 87% of confirmed COVID cases and 77% of confirmed COVID deaths.

We need Public Health Councils as part of the solution toward addressing this racial inequity and for a safe reopening that does not jeopardize people's health, jobs, business operations, and our overall economy.

[optional--add details about your support as an individual, organization or business, or REMOVE THIS LINE]

By serving as the public’s eyes and ears, Public Health Councils will greatly expand the capacity of the County Public Health Department and help us protect our entire community's health, stem any outbreaks, support our economy, and recover from the pandemic.

Thank you for your consideration and leadership.
