[1]Real Justice
John,
Earlier this month, our team announced a historic round of endorsements.
We’re endorsing SEVEN reform-minded candidates running to #FliptheBench in
New Orleans and transform what justice looks like in one of the most
incarcerated cities in the country.
So far, the response has been incredible. There’s an unprecedented level
of nationwide attention that we’ve never seen before on a local election
like this:

New Orleans has long been one of the most incarcerated cities in the
country — in particular for Black and brown people.
Black men only make up 19% of the city’s population, but account for 88%
of folks who spend time in jail.
The systemic problems that have led to mass incarceration in New Orleans
trace back to the old-school style of judges that have traditionally sat
on this bench.
For years, judges in New Orleans have had strong ties to the bail bond
industry and have put profit over people, levying fines and fees to pad
their own budgets. As a result, judges have put huge numbers of innocent
people in prison and imposed years of incarceration on those who committed
low-level, non-dangerous offenses.
But now, we have a rare opportunity to end this cycle. Everyone on the
slate of candidates we’re endorsing is or was a public defender — and is
using that experience to inform their reform-minded agenda.
